I am a big fan of Nick Anderson’s YouTube channel, THE BOOK GRAVEYARD.
On it (and the associated Book Graveyard blog), he posts insightful reviews of vintage paperbacks and new books that catch his attention.
If you’re a fan of the types of books Nick covers in his reviews—which include horror, crime, noir, mystery, men’s adventure, action, spy, science fiction, pulp, gothic, movie novelizations, and sleaze—you should definitely subscribe to his YouTube channel and blog.
One of Nick’s recent videos is a cool flip-through of GIL COHEN: INSIDE/OUT—THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION, the new book showcasing Gil’s men’s adventure magazine covers and interior illustrations I co-edited with Gil and my publishing partner Wyatt Doyle.
It’s a follow-up to our book ONE MAN ARMY: THE ACTION PAPERBACK ART OF GIL COHEN, which focuses on Gil’s cover art for Don Pendleton’s EXECUTIONER series and its spinoffs.
At age 94, Gil Cohen is the last surviving artist who created cover paintings and interior illustrations for men’s adventure magazines during all three decades of the genre’s existence.
During those years he created more than 500 illustrations for major MAMs like ADVENTURE, ARGOSY, FOR MEN ONLY, MALE, MAN’S WORLD, MEN, STAG, and others.
As you’ll see in Nick’s video, Gil depicted virtually every type of subject found in the often wild stories published by MAMs, ranging from Westerns, exotic adventure yarns, and war stories to tales about seductive women, motorcycle gangs, and spies.
