Jules Burt looks at GIL COHEN: INSIDE/OUT—THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION

Spread the word

Not long ago, we announced the release of GIL COHEN: INSIDE/OUT—THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION, the new deluxe hardcover I co-edited with Gil Cohen and my Men’s Adventure Library co-editor and publisher Wyatt Doyle.

At age 94, Gil Cohen is the last surviving artist who produced men’s adventure magazine cover paintings and interior illustrations during all three decades of the genre’s existence—the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

This is the first book in a planned four-volume series that will ultimately showcase all of Gil’s more than 600 men’s adventure magazine cover paintings and interior illustrations.

One of the most gratifying things about publishing this book has been seeing the enthusiastic response from collectors and vintage media experts whose opinions we genuinely respect.

One of the latest comes from our friend Jules Burt. Jules is one of Britain’s best-known authorities on vintage paperbacks, classic films, television, and pop-culture collectibles. His popular Collections & Unboxings YouTube channel has more than 116,000 subscribers.

One reason his channel has become so popular is its remarkable variety. In addition to book reviews, Jules posts videos featuring rare books, book fairs, visits to secondhand and antiquarian bookshops, collecting trips, classic films and television, toys, die-cast models, vintage memorabilia, and other retro collectibles. Every episode reflects the enthusiasm of a lifelong collector.

If you enjoy vintage books, movies, television, and collectibles, I heartily recommend subscribing to Jules’ YouTube channel. If you enjoy his videos, please also consider supporting him on Patreon. Collectors and content creators like Jules help keep the history of vintage books, magazines, films, and pop culture alive.

Recently, Jules posted a video flip-through review of GIL COHEN: INSIDE/OUT—THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION. Watching him page through the book is like taking a guided tour with a knowledgeable collector.

Jules has previously reviewed several other books in the Men’s Adventure Library series that I co-edit with Wyatt Doyle, including our other Gil Cohen art book, ONE MAN ARMY: THE ACTION PAPERBACK ART OF GIL COHEN.

It showcases his original cover paintings for Don Pendleton’s Mack Bolan/The Executioner series. Gil did nearly 200 covers for Executioner novels and its spinoffs. He also did artwork for the men’s adventure magazine “Book Bonus” editions of the first two Executioner novels, which are reprinted in the “Vigilante Justice” issue of the MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY, the magazine I co-edit with Bill Cunningham.

Jules has also posted video flip-through reviews of many of our MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY issues, most recently MAQ #14, the Bigfoot issue.

If you’re an MAQ fan, you know that Jules Burt is also one of our favorite MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY guest contributors.

MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY #6, the Heists Issue, includes an article about his favorite heist and caper films.

MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY #7, the Gang Girls Issue, includes Jules’ article about the early juvenile delinquent stories written by Evan Hunter (better known as Ed McBain) and Harlan Ellison.

MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY #11, the UFO Issue, includes his in-depth article about Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s classic cult television series UFO.

So, cheers and many thanks, Jules!

Thanks for your friendship, for your recent review of GIL COHEN: INSIDE/OUT—THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION, your past reviews of Men’s Adventure Library books and MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY issues I’ve co-edited—and your excellent, ongoing contributions to MAQ.

Readers of this blog will almost certainly enjoy Jules’ Collections & Unboxings YouTube channel. Here’s the link to his home page.

I should note that Jules Burt has also been a contributor to Justin Marriott’s great fanzine PAPERBACK FANATIC, which was one of the inspirations for the MAQ.

Here’s a link to a post I did about Justin a while back. PAPERBACK FANATIC #50 was the final issue in the run of that zine. But PAPERBACK FANATIC and other terrific fanzines Justin has published over the years — including THE SLEAZY READER, HOT LEAD, MONSTER MANIACS, BATTLING BRITONS, MEN OF VIOLENCE, PULP APOCALYPSE, and PULP HORROR — are still available on Amazon. And they are all seriously cool!

By the way, in case you missed it, our friend Nick Anderson, host of the always-interesting Book Graveyard podcast and blog also posted a review of GIL COHEN: INSIDE/OUT—THE ARCHIVE COLLECTION. You can see that one in the post at this link. Nick also scored a huge coup when actor Paul Giamatti joined him in the recent episode. Their conversation about vintage paperbacks is fascinating.
