As I write this on Easter Day 2026, MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY #14 is now out on Amazon worldwide.
I first got interested in reprinting vintage men’s adventure magazines about cryptid creatures when I worked with my Men’s Adventure Library co-editor Wyatt Doyle on the CRYPTOZOOLOGY ANTHOLOGY: STRANGE AND MYSTERIOUS CREATURES IN MEN’S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.
We recruited our friend David Coleman, author of THE BIGFOOT FILMOGRAPHY, to write introductions for the stories we reprinted in that volume.
I learned from that project that MAMs played a major role in creating and shaping public awareness of many cryptid creatures, from the most famous hominid cryptids, like the Abominable Snowman (aka the Yeti) and Bigfoot, to the Loch Ness Monster, the Giant Thunderbird, and many others.

Loren Coleman is a towering figure in the realm of cryptozoology. He has been researching and writing about mysterious creatures and phenomena for six decades. His popular books on cryptids include must-haves like BIGFOOT! THE TRUE STORY OF APES IN AMERICA, CRYPTOZOOLOGY A TO Z, and THE FIELD GUIDE TO LAKE MONSTERS, SEA SERPENTS AND OTHER MYSTERY DENIZENS OF THE DEEP. He is one of the most commonly interviewed commentators in TV shows and documentaries about Bigfoot and other cryptid “monsters.”
Loren is also the founder of The International Cryptozoology Museum in Maine. The ICS, which recently moved into a historic building in Bangor, Maine, is the only institution of its kind in the world. When Bill and I picked Bigfoot as the theme for MAQ #14, I immediately asked him if he’d contribute an article listing his top 10 books about Bigfoot. He graciously agreed. Artist and writer Stephen Bissette is another contributor to this issue who is a towering figure of a different kind in the realm of monsters. Stephen rose to international fame in the 1980s when, with writer Alan Moore and inker John Totleben, his artwork for DC Comics’ SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING earned multiple Jack Kirby and Eisner Awards and remains a fan-favorite run in that series.
Bissette’s legendary TYRANT comics series, about a Tyrannosaurus rex, published between 1994 and 1996, is another Eisner Award winner. It was recently reprinted in a new deluxe hardcover edition by Lighthouse Press. He also authored the three volume CRYPTID CINEMA book series. In 2009, he illustrated THE VERMONT MONSTER GUIDE by Joseph A. Citro, a fun-to-read book that explores the folklore of cryptid creatures in that state, like Champ and the Pigman. Most recently, Stephen has continued to explore his twin passions for monsters and pop culture through his PALEO POP project. That series of publications dives into the intersection of paleontology and 20th-century media, documenting the history of dinosaurs in comics, film, and collectibles.
Stephen wrote an in-depth article about hominid cryptids in popular media for MAQ #14, titled “Popsquatch.” He also contributed an interview with his fellow legendary comics luminary Steve Niles, about his BIGFOOT comics series.
A while back, when I told writer Keith Roysdon that Bigfoot was the theme of MAQ #14, he asked if we’d like him to write an article about the legendary Bigfoot episodes of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN TV series. Bill and I said hell yes!—especially since it gave us an excuse to use artist Earl Norem’s awesome cover painting for the May 1977 SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN comic.
It makes sense that Keith did a great job of researching and writing about his subject. For 40 years he was an award-winning investigative journalist for newspapers in Indiana. He’s also the author of an award-winning series of true crime books, the latest of which is COLD CASE MUNCIE. In 2025, he switched gears and wrote a highly praised YA murder mystery novel, THAT OCTOBER.
As usual, I picked stories for this MAQ issue from my collection, scanned and fine-tuned the artwork and photos, and wrote intros for the stories we reprinted. MAQ co-editor and designer Bill Cunningham and I added a few additional special features, and Bill created another fantastically creative layout for it all.
Bill recently finished working with movie director Allan Holzman on the lushly illustrated book CELLULOID WARS 2: THE MAKING OF FORBIDDEN WORLD, the follow-up to CELLULOID WARS: THE MAKING OF BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS. He’s also working with me on the forthcoming third and fourth volumes in our ART OF RON LESSER books series, coming in 2026. They will showcase Ron’s Western, action/adventure, and thriller paperback coverart.
Bill created two special features for MAQ #14: an article about the Saturday morning TV series BIGFOOT AND WILDBOY, and a special gallery of images showing Bigfoot’s appearances in various media.
