At age 94, Gil Cohen is the last surviving artist who produced cover paintings and interior illustrations throughout all three decades of the men’s adventure magazine era. During those years he created more than 500 illustrations depicting virtually every subject found in the often wild stories published in the magazines—from war scenes, Western adventures, and aviation drama to motorcycle gangs, spies, and exotic adventure yarns.
Many of the illustrations reproduced in this book have rarely been seen since their original publication. All restorations were produced from vintage magazines in The Robert Deis Archive, one of the world’s largest private collections of men’s adventure magazines.
Tens of millions of readers are familiar with the iconic paperback cover paintings Gil Cohen for Don Pendleton‘s novels featuring “The Executioner”—Mack Bolan. His original paintings for those novels are showcased in the book ONE MAN ARMY: THE ACTION PAPERBACK ART OF GIL COHEN. Cohen is also well known for the large-scale paintings of American pilots and aircraft he did for galleries and prints starting in the late 1980s. They’re featured in the book GIL COHEN: AVIATION ARTIST. The skills Cohen used to create his paperback and military aviation art were initially developed by doing cover and interior illustrations for men’s adventure magazines. For more information about the ARCHIVE COLLECTION see the blog post at this link.
