George Gross: Covered (PAPERBACK)

$20.95

GEORGE GROSS: COVERED, published in August 2022, is one of the newest art books in The Men’s Adventure Library series, co-edited by Robert Deis and Wyatt Doyle. It’s the first book devoted to the illustration art of George Gross, focusing on his intense and expertly rendered cover art for men’s adventure magazines (MAMs) published in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. It’s also the first book to reveal the connection between Gross and the first paintings to depict characters in Mario Puzo’s novel THE GODFATHER. The text includes a biography of Gross by pulp art expert and historian David Saunders (son of artist Norman Saunders) and an interview with artist Mort Künstler, who was a friend and protégé of Gross. GEORGE GROSS: COVERED is a full color, 8 1/2″ x 11,” coffee table book. There’s also a deluxe hardcover edition with additional content available in a separate listing.

Gross was one of the few commercial illustration artists whose career included creating cover art for classic pulp magazines published in the 1930s and 1940s, men’s adventure magazines published in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and paperback books published from the 1950s to the 1980s. Indeed, his memorable cover art helped define the look of mid-20th Century action/adventure fiction.
